Truancy is spiraling out of control, which leads to many more problems. The progression from school failure to serious adult crime is well documented and terribly expensive. However, with early intervention, lives can literally be saved. Take a look at the following statistics:
- More than 88% of all adult prison inmates in Georgia are high school dropouts (Georgia Department of Corrections, 2003).
- In Georgia, 31% of high school students do not graduate on time (Kids Count, 2006).
- Georgia ranks 42nd in the nation for the teens not in school and not working (Kids Count, 2006).
- Georgia ranks 48th nationally in the percent of teens ages 16-19 who are high school drop-outs (Kids Count, 2006).
- In 106 of the 159 Georgia counties, students graduate at rates at or below the state average. (Kids Count, 2006).
Fulton County Truancy Intervention Project Statistics
- Since its first case in 1992, the Truancy Intervention Project has nearly served 4,000 children in Fulton County.
- Since 1992, a slight majority of children served by TIP have been male. This year 52.3% of students served were male, while 47.7% of students served were female.
- Of the total 3,679 children served by TIP since 1992, 3022 children did not return to the Juvenile Court. This represents an 82.1% total success rate since inception.
- 2,159 Atlanta attorneys have donated 80,924 hours of their time to Truancy Intervention Project cases.
- The hours contributed by TIP attorneys represent a donation to Fulton County of $3, 905,528 since inception. This figure is based on $60 per hour for the first ten hours and $45 per hour for every remaining hour, the rate at which court appointed attorneys are paid.
